Effects of wide band gases on materials

What are the effects of the wide band gas on the physical materials used in the gas network?

The most important materials in the Dutch gas grid are steel, polyvinylchloride and polyethylene. The Dutch natural gas infrastructure consists of a steel transmission network having a total length of more than 12.00km The mains in the distribution network consist of approximately 95.000km of polymeric materials (such as polyvinylchloride and polyethylene) and 29.000km of metal materials (mainly steel, but also some cast iron). Polyethylene is also used in service lines; but also brass and copper are used. The regulators, especially the in-house regulators, are made of steel or aluminum. If one or more of these materials present in the Dutch gas grid are unable to withstand the exposition of future gas, the total existing gas grid is not suitable to transport future gas. (Partial) upgrading of this network will involve very high costs. Even small reductions in life expectancy of the network will cost a fortune.
