Decentralized gas storage to guarantee gas supply and allow balancing of the decentralized energy system

Summary

The applications biogas locally produced, which follows a nearly constant production pattern, will increase significantly in the near future. Biogas is however obtained at low pressures and does not meet the quality specifications of the transmission system operators. This situation currently hinders its applications. It is known that a decentralized gas distribution network would require decentralized gas storage facilities that would serve as a backup to match fluctuations in the local gas demand. In addition, it could facilitate the balancing of the local supply and demand of heat and electricity. Finally, it has the possibility of solving the intermittent supply of renewable energy sources. In this project, we study the technological feasibility of decentralized gas storage. The first part of the research deals with the techno-economic aspects thereof. Biogas is locally combusted to produce electricity or the biogas quality is converted. These processes are not energy efficient. Therefore, we study whether decentralized gas storage offers added value in economic and/or energetic terms. The second part concerns the technology. State of the art biogas storage technology does not meet the requirements to be used to back up fluctuations in the gas demand. We study the performance and possible applications of advanced gas storage technologies, in particular gas adsorption and gas hydrates. The last part deals with the social aspects. Here, we study the environmental, social, legal, safety, etc. conditions that are required to make acceptable the deployment of decentralized gas storage facilities. Overall, the results of this research will show whether decentralized gas storage can contribute to increase the applications of biogas and other renewable energy sources in the energy portfolio.
