Innovative smart grid solution for the new gas value chain

How can smart grid technologies facilitate the introduction of new gases into the grid?

Summary

The gas supply chain will undergo major changes with the multiplication of decentralized local gas injection points. In the Netherlands, the gas coming from the Groningen field has set the standard. Gas is controlled at limited injection points of the transmission grid, where gas conversion and gas blending can take place. It is naive to hold the view that the current gas grid will be capable of handling the new gas quality, which is produced in a local and decentralized fashion. In this project, we investigate the capacity of smart grid technologies to facilitate the introduction these new gas qualities. It will require that we describe the capability maturity model of the new gas grid. It is a matter of fact that the gas grid has been built for the gas quality of Groningen. The adaptation thereof will require large investments. Indeed, producers of biogas can only deliver gas with variable qualities and multiple decentralized points. If this gas is injected at several points into the grid, regional gas distribution companies will have to move from passive transit systems to active systems that dynamically control the quality of gas in bidirectional flows. We think that the introduction of new gases in the distribution grid, combined with locally produced new gases, will require the application of sensors and actuators in the distribution grid. These devices can only be applied efficiently if the information is controlled by smart algorithms. By reflecting on the experience of the electricity industry with smart grids, we aim at providing small producers of biogas, such as farmers, a means to control their production and consumption, as well as a fair pricing mechanism for producers and consumers. Moreover, we are interested in the possible quality management alternatives and the role of old and new appliances in the gas grid.
