Number 12 (October 2014)

Research program

The research program is in the closing phase. The bulk of the research workwill have been executed by 31 December 2014. Research teams will be engaged into reporting and publishing the results. Research leaders will have to deliver a closing report by 16 February 2015. The Program Steering Committee will use these reports to make recommendations to the Board of Governors about the final closing of the projects.

Several events have been organized to facilitate the diffusion and valorization of the results. Groups of researchers are busy with a possible follow up with the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission. The largest event to which everybody is invited will be the closing conference on 18-19 March 2015 in Amsterdam. All activities of the program will resume by 1 July 2015.

Delivering Sustainability with Gas

foto Sixth Research Day

Nemo Science Center in Amsterdam

The closing conference of the Energy Delta Gas Research,"Delivering sustainability with gas", will be held on 18-19 March 2015 at the Nemo Science Center in Amsterdam. This conference is open to anyone who is interested in the results of the EDGaR program.

The first day will include four thematic plenary sessions on gas quality, gas as an energy system enabler and the gas market, as well as two forums on the future of gas and of gas research. Posters will be presented at the first day and remained hung during the second day.

The second day will be organized around six thematic sessions: gas quality and appliances, green gas production, gas markets, gas quality and infrastructure, smart grids and the future of gas infrastructure. The day will end with three forums on gas-related questions.

Participants to the EDGaR program can present a poster. Please submit the name of the authors and the title of the poster through this form before 18 February 2015. The final poster in PDF formal is due before 25 February.

You can register by filling the registration form. We advise you to do it as soon as possible but before 4 March. The conference, open to participants outside of EDGaR, is limited to 200 persons.

Workshops

Information session

Gasunie organizes an information session, open to EDGaR participants, about the results of the project “Strategic information technology innovation orientation” (D03).

The research team develops awareness and acquires knowledge on the strategic information technology for gas infrastructure companies from a fundamental and business perspective.

It has started four research studies in collaboration with consultants, the University of Groningen and the European School of Management and Technology, Berlin.

The session will be articulated around four themes:

  • The role of information technology in the gas infrastructure
  • Big data and analytics
  • Snapshot: information technology control and agility
  • Metering convergence

The session will be held at Gasunie headquarters, Concourslaan 17, Groningen, on 20 November 2014, from 10:00 to 12:00. If you want further information and would like to attend this session, please contact per e-mail as soon as possible the research leader, Roy Fischer.

Workshop on Horizon 2020

The Steering Committee of EDGaR and DVGW has met European partners in Bonn in September to discuss further the Horizon 2020 program. Two teams are currently working out proposals on “Large scale energy storage” (LCE-9-2015) and “Modelling and analysing the energy system, its transformation and impacts” (LCE-21-2015). They will gather for a working workshop in Brussels. Participation to this workhsop is upon invitation only. For further information, please contact the program manager, Jean-François Auger.

Follow up innovations

The project societal impact (also known as “knowledge valorization”) is entering a new phase. As a result of the scientific output of the 30 research projects, published in more than 450 documents, the team identified 150 potential innovations. Research leaders are now preparing sales pitches, which will be presented in a so-called “Dragon’s Den” to the innovations managers  of the EDGaR partners.

The objective of this exercise is to come to a number of business or value cases that will be adopted by the management of the partners. After accepting ownership of these business or value cases the respective companies will pursue a successful implementation in our society. This activity is scheduled on 1 December 2014. For further information, please contact the innovation manager Peter van Dijk.

About people

Prize winners. Luc Rabou, B.F. van Egmond, Berend Vreugdenhil and Bram van der Drift won a prize for their poster "Measurement of organic sulphur and nitrogen compounds in biomass producer gas by SPA sampling." They presented it at the 22nd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition in Vienna, in June 2014.

Management. Wibe Snelting, who studies marketing management at the University of Groningen, has joined the bureau of EDGaR. As management assistant, he will contribute to the organization of the conferences and the closing of the research program.

Third prize. András Perl and Wim van Gemert won the third prize for their poster at the International Gas Union Research Conference (IGRC). The poster is titled "Methane storage in porous activated carbons" and gives a summary about their research on methane storage through adsorption on porous materials.
